In most cases a great goaltending performance and .Unle s that team happens to be the 2014-15 .This Devils has team found a way to do the impo sible: Take a performance from their starting goalie, , that should be worthy of making him at the very least a Vezina Trophy Finalist, and completely waste it due to their inability to score or give him any kind of support.Schneider's performance this season has been nothing short of incredible. He has been durable, starting 60 of their first 70 games (including Taysom Hill Jersey their game on Tuesday against the ), and he has been one of the best, most consistent starting goalies in the league with a .927 save percentage entering play on Tuesday that is third in the NHL behind only Montreal's and Minnesota's .And his team isn't going to be anywhere near the playoffs. This is a pretty infamous performance by the Devils, and I wanted to see if any other teams have managed to be this bad with a goalie that has been this good over a full season. I went back and pulled all single season goalie performances that included at least 60 appearances in a season and a save percentage better than .925. From there, I wanted to see how each of those teams did during the regular season and how far they went in the playoffs. The results: In the recorded history of save percentages (going back to the mid-80s, ) only 17 goalies fit that criteria (including Schneider and Montreal's Carey Price this season). Out of that group, Malcolm Roach Jersey 15 of those teams made the playoffs (and I'm including this year's ). Seven teams went as far as the Conference Final, three reached the Stanley Cup Final, and one of them (the 2011-12 ) won it. Only two teams lost in the first round and only two (including this year's Devils) failed to make the playoffs at all.No Help For Cory SchneiderPlayerTeamSeasonGamesSave %Team PointsPlayoff ResultVancouver2010-1160.928117Lost Stanley CupColorado2013-1463.927112First RoundHenrik LundqvistNew York2011-1262.930109Conference FinalCarey PriceMontreal2014-1566*.935108*TBDMartin BrodeurNew Jersey1996-9767.927104Second RoundRyan MillerBuffalo2009-1069.929100First RoundPatrick RoyColorado2001-0263.92599Conference FinalNashville2010-1164.93099Second RoundArizona2011-1267.93097Conference FinalLos Angeles2011-1269.92995Won Stanley CupDominik HasekBuffalo1996-9767.93092Second RoundDominik HasekBuffalo1998-9964.93791Lost Stanley CupByron DafoeBoston1998-9968.92691Second RoundDominik HasekBuffalo1997-9872.93289Conference FinalJose TheodoreMontreal2001-0267.93187Second RoundCory SchneiderNew Jersey2014-1570*.92782*Mi sedRoberto LuongoFlorida2003-0472.93175Mi sedPretty amazing stuff. First of all, performances like this from a goalie are rare. Luongo and Hasek are the only players that appeared on the list more than once. Second, when a team has a goalie that is able to Josh Adams Jersey play that many games and play at that level it is almost always good enough to not only make the playoffs, but to win at least a round or two once they get there. The 2003-04 and this year's Devils are the only two exceptions. The 2003-04 Panthers suffered from the same lack of offense that the Devils have experienced this season (23rd in the league in goals) but also had an absolutely abysmal defense in front of Luongo that resulted Adam Trautman Jersey in them giving up the 24th most goals even though Luongo led the league in save percentage while playing in more than 87 percent of his team's games. That's what happens when your team gives up more than 34 shots per game. But when it comes to this Devils team (which hasn't been as good defensively this season as it has been in recent years) it mostly comes down to a forward group that had the brutal combination of being short on skill and depth and being made up primarily of players on the wrong side of 30 for most of the season. It resulted in a team that is 28th in goals scored and 29th in generating shots (only 24 per game, barely ahead of only the ).Schneider took the lo s in 10 starts this season where he James Hurst Jersey allowed two or fewer goals, tied for the most in the league with Arizona's Mike Smith, including three games where he allowed one goal and still ended up taking a lo s, more than any other goalie in the league. After being one of the best po se sion teams in the NHL last season that fell short of the playoffs because of an historically bad year in the shootout and relying too much on an already declined Martin Brodeur, there were a couple of reasons to believe in this team before the season.Schneider taking over as the clear starting goalie was the biggest reason. He did not disappoint. The rest of the team did.
